Colombia, Bogota – Colombian security officers have captured Dairo Antonio Usuga better known as Otoniel, Colombia’s most-wanted drug trafficker

Colombia President Iván Duque likened the arrest Saturday of Dairo Antonio Úsuga to the capture three decades ago of Pablo Escobar.

During a broadcast video message, Mr Duque added, “This is the biggest blow against drug trafficking in our country this century.” According to Mr. Duque, one police officer died during the operation.

Otoniel was seized after a joint operation by the army, air force, and police on Saturday during an operation in a rural area of the South American nation’s Uraba region.

The US had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Otoniel, who is considered one of Colombia’s most notorious individuals.

Otoniel was indicted in the United States in 2009 and is currently awaiting extradition to the country, where he would appear in federal court in the Southern District of New York.

The Colombian government accuses the group of being one of the main drivers of the worst spell of nationwide violence since the signing of a peace agreement with FARC guerillas in2016. The gang is financed mostly by drug trafficking, illicit mining, and extortion.

Though Mr. Duque claimed that Otoniel’s capture marked the end of the Gulf Clan, Colombia Risk Analysis head Sergio Guzman predicted that a new leader will emerge soon.

“It’s a major matter because he’s Colombia’s biggest drug lord,” Mr Guzman said, adding that the arrest will not affect the basics of the drug trade.
