Land force commander Lt. Gen Muhoozi Keinerugaba has vowed to resign from the army by next year if his soldier’s problems are not sorted.

The land force commander revealed that he requested for a 20 Billion supplementary budget to address soldiers welfare and accommodation in Bombo military headquarters, Nakasongola and Makindye Barracks only to be foiled by a cartel at the defense ministry. “A cartel at the defense ministry has been tossing our office around, we asked for a 20 Billion to address pertinent issues of accommodation” said Muhoozi.

Muhoozi further revealed that he can’t continue to lead the land forces amid poor accommodation for his soldiers who live in poor houses, earn poor salary, dress poorly and live like paupers. “I will retire from the army by next year having served for 28 years, soldiers live like paupers and cave man” said Muhoozi.

Muhoozi took over as Land force commander barely months ago after the Commander in Chief and his father Yoweri Kaguta Museveni reshuffled him from heading the  elite forces a position he held since 2017.

Muhoozi attributed the poor accommodation of soldiers to the corruption that has eaten up the defense ministry.

This has prompted several Legislators to question the defense expenditure and gave tasked the defense minister to account for the money.

The defense budget has steadily increased over the last couple of years with the latest from 1.5 Trillion to 3.6 Trillion in 2020 and 2021 respectively. This took the lions share in the recently read national budget of 2021/22 financial year.
