Two Ugandan teachers have been arrested from Rwandan border.
The arrested teachers are Annet Gloria and Ayebare Kabanyena both residents of Kibumba village in Rwingwe parish, in Kisoro district. The two teachers are both teachers at at Maranatha Nursery and Primary School located in Rwanda’s north-western district of Rubavu.
According to their relatives, Kabanyana and Ayebare were arrested at the border as they coming to Uganda for a short holiday. Earlier, both Ayebare and Kabanyana who have taught in Rwanda for almost seven years had promised their families a short visit and they were waiting for them.
According Kabanyana and Ayebare’s friends from Rwanda they were arrested and taken to unknown destination. Francis Ndagize, the father of Ayebare says that after hearing of the victims’ arrest, they have rushed to the Ugandan Immigration office at Cyanika border for help.
Captain Peter Mugisha, the Kisoro District Resident District Commissioner said that the district security is aware of the victims’ arrest and they’re working hand in hand to connect with their Rwandan counterparts. The Rwandan Immigration officials asked the family members to wait as they check in all Rwandan prisons.
Mugisha noted that they have already contacted Rwandan authorities and were promised that the matter will be handled mutually.
This is not the first time Ugandan teachers are arrested in Rwanda. Early this year, Alex Balikitenda from Kaliro district, Samuel Nalumenya Abdul Ssenono Mutwarib from Wakiso district, and Jethro Naturinda from Kabale district were arrested and sent to Rwenzamenyo–Nyamirambo detention center until June when they were deported in through Katuna Border Kabale district.
The Uganda/Rwanda borders have been closed since February 27th 2019.
