While conducting a press conference at the Uganda Media center on Tuesday, Chris Baryomunsi the Information Minister revealed the Cabinet’s resolution of demolishing and reconstructing the Makerere University main building (Ivory tower). The minister further informed the country that 21 billion Shillings has been approved by Cabinet for the reconstruction of the icon.
“We have directed the Ministry of Finance to release 21 billion Shillings for the reconstruction of the building,” Baryomunsi said.
The government chief valuer’s report had estimated the reconstruction of the building at 15 billion Shillings without demolishing. However, following the Cabinet’s resolution of demolishing the entire building and then reconstruct it, 21 billion Shillings will be released for this project.
The Ivory tower was immensely destroyed on the night of 19th September 2020 when a mysterious inferno gutted it.
Prof Barnabas Nawangwe a senior architect and the University Vice-Chancellor endorsed Cabinets’ resolution of demolishing the entire building saying it is the best option considering the enormous damage to the structure. He informed that the University council has approved the restoration plan of the building.
Last year, an investigation was conducted by the Criminal Investigation Directorate to establish what had triggered off the inferno which demolished the 80-year-old structure, and it was discovered that the fire had been caused by electricity.
