The National council for higher education, NCHE has announced the reopening of medical schools starting 13th August 2021. According to Prof. Mary okwakwol, NCHE executive director, all the school heads, chancellors and principals of medical schools have been notified to prepare for the reopening.
In response to Prof. Mary okwakwol, the deputy vice Chancellor Lira University Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum has said that the university is ready to reopen on Friday 13th August 2021 for only medical students in years three and four respectively.
He added that all students must be tested and vaccinated for Covid-19 on their return to enable the university run smoothly under standard operating procedures (SOPs).
While issuing the directives during the lifting of the nationwide lockdown on July 30th, Museveni listed medical students as a source of specialized human resources for the health sector. Apparently, trainee doctors and nurses are engaged in the mandatory internship, which involves doing clinical work at the various hospitals and providing support to senior doctors and nurses.
President Museveni has been emphasizing and prioritising of science subjects over arts, in this circumstance other students shall wait for 66 days that he directed during his last presidential address.
